While the rest of us were indulging in ham, Christmas pudding and a few wines, Toowoomba Titans/Queensland Pirates rep players, Grant Norman and Tessa Knight, were heading for Everest Base Camp. After a long, arduous, dirty (no shower for 10 days en route), oxygen-deprived, but exhilarating, trek they finally climbed the last few kilometres to reach Base Camp on New Year’s Day, a height of around 5400 metres.
As if that wasn’t an exciting enough start to 2019, Grant then went down on bended knee and proposed to a very excited Tessa. That made the return journey so much easier until they finally reached Katmandu on the 6th and holed up in a 5 star hotel for their first shower in 16 days, almost their first beer (sneaked a couple in at Namche Bazaar – 2 days from the end), a good steak, a massage (for aching backs and knees) and 24 hour room service!
To complete their experience, what should they see along the way in the middle of the Himalayas but ………. A VOLLEYBALL COURT … in a tiny village just below them! Unfortunately no time to stop for a quick one on one!
Another win for volleyball in the romance department so be warned all those couples currently playing in our volleyball comps – it could be ……………
Love at First Spike!
